About This Place

Nestled in the heart of historic York, Bettys Café Tea Rooms offers an exceptional blend of traditional British tea house charm and café sophistication. As a purveyor of classic English culinary heritage, Bettys delivers an experience steeped in indulgence and elegance. Whether you’re seeking a leisurely afternoon tea or a hearty meal, this iconic establishment crafted since 1919 invites you to savor a culinary journey that delights all senses.

Step inside and you immediately enter a world where timeless Edwardian decor meets warm, attentive service. The ambiance is both refined and welcoming—crisp linens, gleaming china, and the delicate clinking of tea cups set the scene for a quintessentially English experience. The elegant Belmont Room, a highlight among the rooms, enchants guests with its tasteful interior and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for relaxing conversations or intimate celebrations.

Bettys' menu is a treasure trove of British favorites elevated with precision and care. Their signature Scones, freshly baked and served with rich clotted cream and vibrant Yorkshire rhubarb & strawberry preserve, are a sublime teatime indulgence. The Spiced Grand Cru Hot Chocolate offers a luscious, velvety depth, perfectly warming for colder days. For those seeking a classic yet indulgent treat, the Bettys Traditional Afternoon Tea is a must-try — an array of delicate pastries, miniature cake selections like the Raspberry Tart and Caramel & Chocolate Pillow create a perfectly balanced symphony of sweetness.

Notably, Bettys doesn’t just excel in teas and pastries; their savory offerings hold their own with equally impressive flair. From the rich, wine-infused Yorkshire Steak Vol-au-Vent accompanied by melt-in-the-mouth mashed potatoes to the delightfully fresh Fish Bake with salmon, prawn, and haddock, every dish is crafted with attention to authentic flavors and quality ingredients. The Smoked Salmon and Pork Pie and the famously comforting Fish, Chips and Peas are classics reinvented to perfection, promising a satisfying lunch or dinner service.

Guests repeatedly praise the attentive and friendly staff who elevate every visit. One diner fondly recalls being personally served by Esther, noting how smoothly their dining experience unfolded — a testament to Bettys’ commitment to impeccable hospitality. Another customer highlights the generosity and finesse in the Yorkshire Steak Vol-au-Vent, especially remarking on the unforgettable mashed potatoes, while others rave about the generosity of the pastry selections, particularly praising the balance of flavors in the Engadine, sticky toffee, and cheesecake desserts.

Bettys also understands the importance of inclusivity, offering a carefully curated Non-Gluten Afternoon Tea Menu that includes a tea-infused sultana scone with Yorkshire rhubarb & strawberry preserve and clotted cream, allowing everyone to partake in this quintessential experience. For those wishing to bring a slice of Bettys home, the range of biscuit tins — from rich Yorkshire Shortbread to dark Swiss chocolate-dusted Chocolate Shortbread — make enviable gifts or personal treats.

Whether visiting for the first time or as a cherished tradition, Bettys Café Tea Rooms promises a sensory escape into Yorkshire hospitality and British culinary excellence. It’s an invitation to slow down, savor, and soak in the simple pleasures of fine tea, exquisite food, and warm service—making every visit a memory worth cherishing.

Can't believe it took me till my final year at uni before trying Bettys, not for their afternoon tea but their dinner menu. Reckon I was served by Esther (per the bill) who ensured I had a smooth dining experience. Foodwise I love the amount of wine added into the Yorkshire Steak Vol-au-vent and the mash potatoes that came with are unlike anything I have ever tasted. Like others said, the quality and portion size of the meal justify the price tag. And ye the pianist made the atmosphere quite nice too. Hope to bring my family/friend here next time.

You kind of expect this response when it comes to bettys. But it's well deserved. Just finished our evening with sweets- the engadine, sticky toffee, cheesecake and the sundae. All received fulsome praise. If I was being picky, the engadine was a little dry once the toffee sauce was gone; but the almond flavour was delicious. I also had the mojito- the ginger adding a really pleasant aftertaste. Hit chocolates were enjoyed too. The pianist was outstanding and received regular rounds of applause.

It was crowded when we entered and were lucky to get a table without a reservation (although we were given only an hour before the reserved tables is needed). The staff were all nice and friendly. Would have been nice to be having a proper meal here we had the afternoon tea set and the items were marvellous.

Just simply sublime! The Belmont room is a beautiful piece of interior design and from the moment I walked in I was provided with the best service I could possibly be given, second to none! They take your coat for you and make all the necessary dietary arrangements for you so your afternoon tea is perfect. I loved the endless selection of teas and especially the Christmas tea, the hints of cinnamon complemented the festive feel of the tea. Serenaded by a beautifully composed live pianist, who was playing Christmas songs all afternoon, the atmosphere was second to none. The afternoon tea I had with items swapped out for my nut allergy was delicious, especially the scones you can tell the butter was extremely high quality due to how thick it was. I was served by the wonderful Imogen I believe. She had such a wonderful smile and demeanour and catered to my every need that afternoon, I made sure to leave her a big tip. I was also pleased you could order shop items from the Belmont room itself which really helped avoid that gnarly queue downstairs.

Our first trip to Betty’s. Excellent service, no wait despite going at lunch time. Lovely service and friendly staff. The fish bake with salmon and prawn and haddock was delicious. The afternoon tea was a must to test. A satisfying and unhurried experience. It was my daughter’s birthday and so they bought her out a little fondant fancy with a candle on it. A nice but not over the top gesture.

Fantastic elegant experience at afternoon tea for our group! There is an upstairs space where you can book tea ahead of time, which we did since our group was large. I had thought we would need two separate tables, but they were able to seat us all together. There is a pianist, playing music in the background which added to the ambience. Elegant without being stuffy. I did feel rather like being on a Cunard line ship. Our server, Diane, was wonderful, explaining the different types of tea and noting that one was only available there in that room and not for sale or at the tea room downstairs. There were tiered trays of delicious sandwiches, scones, and pastries—plenty of choices. They were even able to accommodate a vegan in our group with her own tower of beautiful treats.

It is difficult to define exactly what it is about Betty's that keeps me coming back for more every time I visit York. If you were to look hard enough you could maybe find other places with slightly better service, or menu options, or an equally eyecatching location. But here at Betty's, for me at least they score consistently well enough in all areas to become greater than the sum of their parts. The menu is extensive and enticing, the servers are always attentive and as for the location, we'll it's York. Need I say more. The shop selling many of their delicious drinks and cakes etc to take away is also a welcome addition to the premises. If your hunger does not require instant gratification and you are prepared to stand in line and wait your turn, you should definitely try to experience this.

We came here as part of our York Ghost Week experience and loved every second of it! The staff is always so kind and helpful, and the food was delicious. I love the Yorkshire cream tea, and heated scones. Also loved the limited edition Chocolate ghosts, wonderful job!
